Unless you are a teetotaler, you will quickly come to appreciate the many tasty cocktails the local bars have to offer. One can sail from restaurant to restaurant, many that are only accessible by boat.
Eating out can be very expensive in the BVIs. There are many wonderful restaurants and bars that you should not miss. A great way to experience those places is to have an adult beverage or two and an appetizer at the restaurant, and prepare your main meals on the boat.
There are many wonderful and creative drinks just waiting to be tried. Our goal is to try them all! Below are a few of our favorites.
The Painkiller is local favorite, and must be tried. Many lay claim to originating the drink, but you can find it just about every where. It consists of rum (the more the better!) with 4 parts pineapple juice, 1 part cream of coconut and 1 part orange juice served over the rocks with a generous amount of fresh nutmeg on top.
Apparently, there is quite a history to Grog. The original recipe is simply watered down rum. This version was served to early sailors, a tradition sadly lost in today’s corporate culture. The version I like is found at Pusser’s (there are several in the BVIs), and is rather tasty and refreshing: 2 parts water, 1 part Pusser's Rum, lime juice to taste, dark cane sugar to taste.
Jamaica Me Crazy is another fine Pusser’s concoction. It consists of Pusser's Rum, Coconut Rum, Passion Fruit juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, dash of Grenadine.
Pusser’s Rum Punch is by far one of the better “punches” we’ve had (maybe due to the location?). Pusser’s rum punch is made up of 2 ounces Pusser's Rum, equal parts guava, orange and pineapple juices with the juice of 1/2 lime and a touch of grenadine, finished the drink with nutmeg on top, and a fresh fruit garnish.
Friggin in De Riggin, I’d like to know how that name was created, sounds like fun. We found this drink at Foxy’s Taboo and after drinking it you will certainly feel in the mood for some friggin. Looking for some friggin at home, then try this: Mount Gay frozen with mango and banana, topped with a splash of Goslings dark rum.
Wreck on the Rocks will definitely get you wrecked; and of course it is also at Foxy’s. Let’s just say that after a couple of these you should take a walk before getting in your dingy. Here’s why: Mix Cruzan dark, Mango, and coconut rums, pour over ice and toss in a splash of Rosas Lime juice. Plan on a late start the next day.
One of Stan’s favorite drinks is the Dark and Stormy. It is refreshing without being sweet. It is usually made with dark rum, ginger beer (ginger ale), and a couple squeezed slices of lime.
Drink on the boat? Of course! And who can resist a Rum and coke made with a local Rum. If you are a Rum snob, then you may turn your nose up at the local Rums. However, we found them to be flavorable and delightful.
Gin and Tonic, in my opinion there is no finer drink for the tropics. Simple and refreshing, with the added health benefit of Quinine!
